Publication Date: April 29, 2014

I received a copy of this book from the publisher (Month9Books) and Chapter By Chapter for an honest review in anticipation of an upcoming Review Tour for the sequel ‘Of Delicate Pieces’.

Goodreads Summary:

A captivating debut about the fragility of life, love, and perspective.

When Chase dies tragically, Alex embraces her own mortality. What she didn’t expect was that she’d have to make a choice: forget the years of pain and suffering once and for all, or linger as a spirit and get another chance at life and love.

Alex doesn’t hesitate to choose; she’d follow Chase anywhere. But the spirit world is nothing like she expected, and Alex finds she’s forced to fight for her life once more. For even in a world where secrets are buried much deeper than six feet under, a legacy can continue to haunt you—and in a place this dangerous, no one is resting in peace.

This is such a beautiful cover!

I really enjoyed this book. This is one of those stories that surprise you. I didn’t expect to like this as much as I did! I savoured every word and took my time enjoying every delicious moment.

“Freedom of choice doesn’t refute the idea of fate. Choices lead you to various paths, but some lives are intended to cross with others. It’s just in their design; some magnetically attract and also repel”.

The World:

I thought the worldbuilding was ingenious. The details were impeccable and not overbearing. Instead bit by bit, details were revealed and this was done in a really subtle manner.

  • Alex ends up in a ‘school’ for the dead where she learns about the spirit world and their history. She thought she had made the easy choice but soon she is entangled in the mystery of who she is, who her ancestors were and where she belongs in this rivalry between ghosts.
  • Imagine a world where you live as a spirit, without the weight of a body but with the capacity to do soo much! Seeing as far as you allow yourself to, where the only limit is your imagination and willpower!
  • In death, the mind freed from the physical constraints of a body is limitless. New horizons are arrived at and surpassed.
  • Radio waves are used as a means of transportation and apparently the telemarketers are in on it so be careful next time you get a call from one, it just might be a ruse to allow a spirit to travel!
  • Awesome abilities like being able to see the colours of emotions or being able to elicit emotions using art.
  • Like any world, there are the misfits, the priveliged and those trying to fit it at any cost. Alex has to figure out where she fits in since her arrival has caused much consternation and gossip as to where she belongs.

The Characters

I found the characters to be fully developed and multi-dimensional, even the secondary characters served a purpose and are memorable.

  • Alex, the main character has had the thought of death hanging over her from since she was born with the disease . Before her own life ended, she lost her dearest friend and only love, Chase. So when given a choice between forgetting all the painful memories or keeping them with the possibility of seeing Chase again, her choice was easy. I love the connection between these two, its sweet and somewhat innocent. So she has it made, right? Except things are not as simple as she thought.
  • Chase is handsome and caring, the perfect guy really. I like that he is always there for Alex and that he never gives up on her even if it meant him getting into trouble.
  • The Lasalle brothers are all very interesting and I felt like I got to know all of them equally. Jonas is by far the most intriguing though, because I am not quite sure what to make of him. He is such a contrary person, I doubt he even knows for sure what he really feels.

I really liked this book! It was the right mix of budding romance, suspense and fantasy to keep me interested. The worldbuilding is original and imaginative.I was so happy I had the second book ready and waiting because I was not ready to leave this world just yet!

If there was anything I didn’t like it’s that there were some ‘things’ left hanging and others that were  alluded to that were never really explained but that’s for the sequel I’m sure.
