Settling into her second year of death, Alex is ready to explore her limitless mind in an afterworld that changes each day, but she still isn’t resting in peace.
The ‘gifted’ are humans who see spirits and have the same extraordinary mental powers, though they aren’t considered equals. Centuries ago, Alex’s family led the movement to keep the living and dead separated, but the gifted believe Alex is a reincarnation of their slain civil leader. When they begin to break down the barriers that protect the city, the afterworld becomes dangerous and vulnerable to exposure. The living and dead both want to use Alex for their own gain, but what they don’t realize is that neither side will want her when they find out who she really is.
In the afterworld, nothing stays buried for long.
This is one of those books that draw you into its world and seduces you into becoming more than a casual observer. Suddenly you are walking alongside the characters and experiencing their every joy or sorrow or confusion or fear; everything with them.
I love this world with its intricacy and details. There is life after death and the mind no longer tethered or weighed down by a phyical body is capable of amazing feats. We got a taste of these in the first book but this instalment adds new abilites to the mix.
I was glad to re-immerse myself into this world with its well developed, multi-faceted, real characters. I got to see other sides of the previously introduced characters that made it into this book and got to discover new ones.
Alex, the main character is still learning to uncover her mind’s potential and the bond between her and Chase is stronger than ever. This storyline focuses a lot on her heritage and discovering where her place is in this society of the spirited. The answer when it somes leads to more questions and uncertainty and potential danger.
“You are both the hunter and the hunted. And anything unclear makes people nervous”.
It seems like everytime she finds out something new, it’s even worst than what she had imagined.
“Every time!” she screamed, Every time i find out something new, I hate myself more!”
I like the way in which the story unfolds. It’s not told in fits and bursts, rather, each secret is revealed through a character’s narrative, or letters or a dream or even an eavesdropped conversation which is then seamlessly woven into the overall narrative.
The plot is intriguing and suspenseful. Just when one is certain that one has it all figured out , there comes a new twist! Absolutely enthralling. I could not put this book down. Some of the issues apparent throughout were social acceptance, discrimination and the lengths one would go to be accepted or be part of a certain clique perceived to be more prominent.
“Outsiders are threats. That is our natural way of thinking. We aren’t comfortable with differences, because we don’t like uncertainty. We fear it.”
Of Delicate Pieces is poignant, mysterious, suspenseful and a delightful read.
If you love a story that takes you for a ride emotionally and keeps you guessing, try this one. Seriously!
OF DELICATE PIECES is the follow-up to A. Lynden Rolland’s OF BREAKABLE THINGS.
FOLLOW UP TO:
A captivating debut about the fragility of life, love, and perspective.
When Chase dies tragically, Alex embraces her own mortality. What she didn’t expect was that she’d have to make a choice: forget the years of pain and suffering once and for all, or linger as a spirit and get another chance at life and love.
Alex doesn’t hesitate to choose; she’d follow Chase anywhere. But the spirit world is nothing like she expected, and Alex finds she’s forced to fight for her life once more. For even in a world where secrets are buried much deeper than six feet under, a legacy can continue to haunt you—and in a place this dangerous, no one is resting in peace.
