Worlds of Ink and Shadow by Lena Coakley
Publication Date: January 5, 2016
Publisher: HarperCollins Canada / Amulet

Charlotte, Branwell, Emily, and Anne. The Brontë siblings have always been inseparable. After all, nothing can bond four siblings quite like life in an isolated parsonage out on the moors. Their vivid imaginations lend them escape from their strict upbringing, actually transporting them into their created worlds: the glittering Verdopolis and the romantic and melancholy Gondal. But at what price? As Branwell begins to slip into madness and the sisters feel their real lives slipping away, they must weigh the cost of their powerful imaginations, even as their characters—the brooding Rogue and dashing Duke of Zamorna—refuse to let them go.

Gorgeously written and based on the Brontës’ juvenilia, Worlds of Ink & Shadow brings to life one of history’s most celebrated literary families.

Top Five Reasons To Read Worlds of Ink And Shadow

1) Because you love the Brontës.

If you love Jane Eyre, Wuthering Heights and A Tenant of Wildfell Hall, this book will give you insight into what the authors of these books were like as teens—their fears, their dreams, and their development as writers.

2) Because you’ve never heard of the Brontës.

Wuthering What? you say. If you don’t know about these authors, their lives were quite fascinating. Poor and isolated, the four Brontë siblings, Charlotte, Branwell, Emily, and Anne, lived on the Yorkshire moors in Haworth, England in the early 1800s. Surrounded by a dingy factory town, the siblings retreated into their imaginations, creating fabulous fantasy worlds.

3) Because you love fantasy.

Yes, this book is historical fiction, but it also has a fantasy element. Those fantasy worlds that the Brontës wrote about? The premise of Worlds of Ink and Shadow is that these places—the glittering city of Verdopolis and the mysterious island of Gondal—were real places that the Brontës could escape to—but for a price.

4) Because you love worldbuilding.

In its praise for Lena’s first book, Witchlanders, the BCCB called her worldbuilding “lush and provocative” and Kirkus called it “exquisite.” She brings the same skills to Worlds of Ink and Shadow.

5) Because you love a good romance.

It was in their childhood writings that Charlotte and Emily Brontë began to develop the romantic heroes that would make them famous: Mr. Rochester, from Jane Eyre, and Heathcliff, from Wuthering Heights. In Worlds of Ink and Shadow Charlotte and Emily meet and fall in love with the early incarnations of these characters: the dashing Duke of Zamorna and the wild, wicked Alexander Rogue.
