Publication Date: February 15, 2016
Publisher: Swoon Romance
My name is Tierra Owens, and I like to kiss. A lot. It numbs the hollow ache in my chest and—for a few minutes—makes me forget how truly alone I am. My mother is an alcoholic. She hates me and insists I’m the reason she’s not married to my father, whom I have never met. My best friend, Kaylee, is the only person who knows the real me. Everyone else sees what I want them to: a happy, confident, popular girl who has the world at her feet.
I am a fraud.
Relationships are forbidden. I avoid them at all costs. Sex? Emotions? Those things make a person vulnerable, and vulnerability always leads to heartbreak. When my childhood crush, Mattie shows up at school my world tumbles off its axis. The shell I surround myself with feels more like a pathetic crutch than a protective barrier, and I find myself wanting things. Daydreaming about what it would be like to have a boyfriend, a relationship—love.
The sad fact is: I’ll never have any of those things. I am unworthy—trash. Which is why my mom abandoned me.
Welcome to Cover2Cover and thanks for taking the time out for a quick Q&A!
Thank you so much for having me!
1. Could you briefly describe your book for the readers?
You bet! Abandoned focuses on a high school senior named Tierra Owens. Side note (Yes, I totally jacked her name from The Bachelor!) Tierra’s mother is the town slut who makes no effort to hide the fact she hates her daughter. Eager to finish school and escape her home life, Tierra focuses on her schoolwork and her dream of becoming an actress and hones her craft by creating a façade of perfection. Her impenetrable shell cracks when her mother walks out on her, and readers get to watch her pick up the pieces while she fights her feelings for her childhood friend.
2. How did you come up with the idea for Abandoned?
This particular story just came to me organically. I wanted to write a story where the hero was more on the sensitive side (still hot and swoony, but less alpha than my usual heroes.) I didn’t know anything other than the main character’s names and a bit of their backstory (childhood friends etc.)
3. Tell us about the main characters.
Tierra and Mattie became friends in elementary school after he tried to steal her cookie during lunch time and she beat him up for it. Mattie thought she was badass and the two became fast friends. Tierra found the love and care she didn’t receive from her mom at home in Mattie’s family, and was crushed when a job transfer forced them to move away. Both Tierra and Mattie harbored secret crushes on one another, but never said anything for fear of ruining their friendship.
4. Do you have a favourite ? Who and Why?
Mattie, hands down. All my heroes put their women on a pedestal, but there’s something about Mattie that’s just a bit deeper, if that makes sense. He’s sweet when he needs to be, badass and protective when needed, and all around swoony in general.
5. Could you share a favourite quote from the book? Why is it your favourite?
Sure! This quote is one of my favorite things I’ve ever written. It’s sweet and touching as it’s one of the last things Mattie’s dad tells him, and hits me in the feels every time I read it “That last day I spent with my dad at the baseball game… He told me something I’ll never forget. He said, “Son, real love doesn’t fade. It grows stronger every day. When you’ve found your person, it won’t matter how much time you’ve spent apart, or how many miles there are between you. If it’s real, and it’s reciprocated, it’ll find a way.”
6. Did you have difficulty with writing a particular part or writing about a particular character?
If so, why? I didn’t struggle with this one. I fell in love with Mattie and Tierra and their story right away, so it was no chore to write their tale.
7. Are you working on anything new at the moment?
I just finished plotting (loosely, I’m a punster) the final book in my Fighting Chance trilogy. Some big things happen in this book and I’m excited for everyone to read it!
I enjoyed having you on my blog today and I wish you success with your future writing!
Thank you so much for having me!
