My Review

I don’t think I’ve ever read a retelling of the Swan Maidens before and surely not one coupled with elements of Romeo and Juliet so needless to say  I was fascinated by the premise.

So there’s a family who has the ability to turn into swans once they have fallen in love for the first time using a magic cloak which they make from feathers.  Within this same town, there is another family who upon reaching puberty transforms into foxes. These two familes have a long history of feuding even though no one is sure anymore why this is so. The Swans are still wary of the foxes however, since before they were able to broker a shaky peace treaty, the foxes hunted them for their hair which have magical properties and took away their cloaks thus stripping them of their ability to change into Swans which had adverse effects on their mental health.

Our female protaganist is from the Swan family, the Vilas and and this story is told from her POV as well as from her best friend soon to be love interest’ POV, Pierce. Pierce is an outsider in this since he belongs to neither family yet also an insider since he knows their secrets. I kind of liked that the author didn’t take the predictable route and put him on the opposing family, the foxes thus, or as they are known, the Renards.

After some years of peace, the Swan’s guards are still up. They train daily in hand to hand combat an with their special bows which are really cool since they seem to have the opposite effect of Cupid’s arrow which was sometimes needed. They also take measures to keep their home hidden from the Renards. Now, someone has broken the peace and Swans and Foxes are being attacked and they are both convinced of the guilt of each party. The twist when it comes is partly expected and totally surprising on the other hand. You have to read it to see what I mean but I loved that it wasn’t totally predictable.

My only issues were a lack of wordlbuilding. I felt like there weren’t enough details given about the world in which they lived in and I thought the book could have benefited from just a few more pages. But I did enjoy this fast-paced read and and the romance was understated which I liked. I liked the blend of Fairytale with the modern, and the mystery surrounding who was trying to put new life into this age-old feud and why.

All in all, an entertaining, quick read with a interesting take on The Swan Maidens and a pretty good retelling.

About The Author

Alyxandra Harvey lives in a stone Victorian house in Ontario, Canada with a few resident ghosts who are allowed to stay as long as they keep company manners. She loves medieval dresses, used to be able to recite all of The Lady of Shalott by Tennyson, and has been accused, more than once, of being born in the wrong century. She believes this to be mostly true except for the fact that she really likes running water, women’s rights, and ice cream. Aside from the ghosts, she also lives with her husband and their dogs. She likes cinnamon lattes, tattoos and books.
