My first thought goind into this was : Aldrik had better not be dead! !Even though I figured he wasn’t and also had in my thoughts why that wouldn’t happen, I was still scared.
Earth’s End begins with Aldrik and Vhalla being brought to the brink of death and back, Aldrik more seriously hurt than Vhalla. We see Aldrik at his most vulnerable and it’s terrifying. I could enter into Vhalla’s feelings and experience her angst and sheer refusal to even consider what seemed inevitable, and it’s a good thing she doesn’t. She does what she needs to do and it pays off.
I love the chemistry between these two but I felt like it weakened Aldrik and I’m not so sure I like him being weak and the two being so reliant on each other. Vhalla has really grown into her powers now and is more confident than ever. She is using her abilities in ways she didn’t imagine was possible and she is loving the power it gives her. Aldrik is finally standing up to the king for her sake but I thought he should have done this more sublty.
The pacing is fast, action-packed with mind-blowing magical feats and there are a lot of emotional and heart wrenching moments. The story just gets better with each book and my only qualm is that I have to wait again for book 4. The author continues to astound with her masterful storytelling and her ability to make her characters so flawed that you can’t help but relate, empathise and fall in love.
The few issues I had with Earth’s End did not affect my enjoyment in any way. With it’s combination of a clever plot, action-packed scenes, political intrigue and elemental magic, this latest book is sure to satisfy even the most picky of readers. I highly recommend Earth’s End to all lovers of Fantasy and suggest that you pick up the rest of the series if you haven’t already! They are well worth the read, I promise you!
