Guest Post – Deleted Scene
Bonus Scene from Wilder: The Guardian Series from Roman’s point of view
Perched in the shadowed oak tree outside Celeste’s bedroom window, I extend my cramped wings triggering the dry leaves around me to rustle ever so softly. I’m not used to remaining in my avian form for so many hours, and I long to stretch out my human legs. The sun has finally risen casting vibrant shades of garnet and gold through the sky; my watch has ended. I could leave, but something keeps me – an invisible primordial pull. And so I stay, my talons fastened around the thick branch tirelessly.
A few hours pass and I see her finally begin to stir. She rolls over in her bed, her blonde curls a tousled mess. She rubs her eyes sleepily, curling into the comforter as she gazes at the clock on the nightstand. I’m filled with a strange sense of jealousy, wishing I was the warm blanket wrapped around her. Stop that! Where is this coming from? I’m overwhelmed by the feelings that have come over me in the past few days. It is like nothing I have ever experienced before. I avert my eyes as she climbs out of bed in her tank top and slips into the bathroom to dress.
Before long she reappears in pale blue jeans and an emerald sweater, which bring out the bright green flecks in her hazel eyes. She walks out of her room and heads down the stairs. I quickly swoop down out of the oak tree and around to the backyard where I will have a better view of the first floor of the house. After a few seconds of searching, I find her and her mother in the kitchen. For a moment I wonder what kind of relationship she has with her mom and what it has been like for her to grow up without her father. I find myself inexplicably saddened by her loss.
After awhile, I contemplate leaving again. It’s the middle of the afternoon and she is with her mother, she should be perfectly safe. And yet I find myself feeling oddly happy and at peace while in her presence. After a hundred years of inner turmoil and conflict, I don’t often have these moments of calm, and I am reluctant to let it go. Peering in through the window, it appears that her mother is leaving. Perhaps I should stay after all, I convince myself.
No sooner had her mother left than she picked up her purse and keys and headed out the door. I quickly fly up and over the house to the front driveway as the engine of her car begins to rumble. Where could she be going? Following her wasn’t even a question, before I know it I’m soaring through the cloudless sky, my keen eyes locked on the silver Honda below.
I know very well that I shouldn’t be here, especially not in my human form. Stellan warned us emphatically to steer clear from her when we returned to Oak Bluffs. But I can’t seem to tear myself away from her. After spending the seemingly infinite night watching her restless sleep, I’m convinced more than ever of whom she really is. I have to keep her safe. I owe it to her father.
And that was just one of the reasons why I followed her here this sunny afternoon.
Tiptoeing through the silent library, I watch her from afar, careful to keep my distance. By the look of intense concentration on her face, it’s clear that she’s searching for something in particular as she roams the never-ending rows of towering bookshelves. Her petite nose scrunches up in distaste as she runs her finger down a particularly dusty novel. I can’t help the smile that forms on my lips. She suddenly whips her head in my direction, glancing around nervously at the deserted aisle. My body immediately tenses. Is there someone else here or has she heard me? I concentrate on the noises around me, but only the stillness pervades.
She crouches down to examine a book on the lowest shelf, pushing aside the wayward golden blonde curls framing her face. A few have escaped from the messy ponytail bobbing on the top of her head giving her an adorably delightful look. You mustn’t think of her like that, my inner voice reprimands harshly, and I attempt to turn my thoughts away from the captivating young girl. Instead I focus on the mission – to keep her safe.
She rounds the corner, and I momentarily lose sight of her. My stomach drops. I have to move quickly so as not to lose her in the stacks. Moving stealthily through the aisles, I notice my heart is racing, and it’s not from the physical exertion. Why am I so drawn to her? I consider the question and am so swept up in my own thoughts that I completely miss the pitter-patter of feet alerting me of her approach. Before my heightened vampire reflexes can react, the young girl plows right into me.
Damn it! She wasn’t supposed to see me. How could I have been so careless? Her mere presence has me in an absolute tailspin. Our untimely collision has sent her chosen book flying through the air, slapping against the marble floor with a silence shattering smack. Without so much as a glance at me, she bends down to pick it up, apologizing on the way. As she straightens, holding a teen romance novel in her hand, her warm hazel eyes meet mine and her cheeks turn a most charming shade of pink.
For a moment, I am dumbstruck, floored by the fact that she is even more beautiful to behold from up close. My breath catches in my throat. The odd thing is that she seems as affected by my presence as I am by hers. Her breath is coming quickly and her eyes are locked onto mine as she stammers to break the awkward silence. I finally manage a light-hearted quip, and quickly turn on my heel before I say something I shouldn’t. As I disappear into the rows of shelves, I can still feel her penetrating gaze on my back, and a tingling warmth runs through me. I am painstakingly tempted to turn around, but I take hold of the little will power I have left and march on.
Suddenly, I’m acutely aware of two very important truths – I am irresistibly drawn to this girl and my life will never be the same as a result of it.
G.K. De Rosa has been an avid reader from a very young age. In fact, before she could even read, she tried fooling everyone into thinking that she could. At the precocious age of two, while living in Italy, she had memorized an entire children’s book in Italian and expertly turned the pages at the exact right moments of the story. As she grew up, she always enjoyed literature, no doubt having been instilled with a love of story telling from her early years in Catholic school where she was greatly influenced by exemplary teachers who taught her the value of English and Literature. Though she did not pursue writing in college and instead went for the more traditional route of International Business inspired by her love for travel and all things foreign, after a move to New York City, she found her creative writing side calling once again. She began writing a restaurant review blog, City Lights and Tasty Bites, detailing her other passion – food! The hectic hustle and bustle of the city, combined with long commuting times gave her the opportunity to spend more time reading and rekindled a lost love. After reading countless books in many diverse genres over the two years in New York City, and returning to her home state of Florida, she felt compelled to write something for herself. She had always felt particularly drawn to Young Adult novels and having been an eternal romantic at heart, a fantasy romance was a natural choice. She currently lives in South Florida with her real life Prince Charming and their fur baby, Nico the German Shepherd.
