Goodreads Summary:

Librarian turned sorcerer. Sorcerer turned hero. Hero turned puppet.

The Solaris Empire found victory in the North and, at the cost of her heart and her innocence, Vhalla Yarl has earned her freedom. But the true fight is only beginning as the secret forces that have been lurking in the shadows, tugging at the strings of Vhalla’s fate, finally come to light. Nowhere is safe, and Vhalla must tread carefully or else she’ll fall into the waiting arms of her greatest foe. Or former lover.

ww review

“Maybe they would never again be the lovers they were, maybe they’d become something better. They’d both grown apart, and maybe they’d grown into the people they should’ve been all along”.
I should have known Elise Kova would not make it so easy. All these twists took my by surprise and stole my breath away. I thought I had it all figured out and had put the puzzle together, boy was I wrong.
Where to begin? There is absolutely nothing that I can say I didn’t love about Water’s Wrath. Trying to keep my emotions in check to write an objective and sensible review instead of fan-girling is so hard. Here goes:
I am so amazed at how great the author is with character and plot development. The characters have all matured so much  as would be expected with all that has happened thus far. No one could emerge unchanged from such ordeal, and this is well reflected in their growth.
Vhalla is far removed from the timid library apprentice we first met in Air Awakens. She is the WindWalker and has really grown into owning it. She is also more ruthless and capable of making hard decisions and doing so on the fly.
Aldrik is no longer trying to dull his pain with alcohol and aloofness. He is trying to be a better man and is stepping up and accepting his role as heir to the throne, and all  without any prodding from anyone, including Vhalla.
Baldair is now a brother in the true sense of the word and was ready if needs be to lend his support to Vhalla and Aldrik.
Vhalla is still too trusting however, and betrayal when it comes catches not only her but everyone including myself, off-guard. The cunning and scheming of this person lends credence to the author’s skill with plot development and twists. She really knows how to keep the readers engaged and keep them guessing.
Clues are hidden throughout as usual, but even when reading with intent, I still missed out on a few of these. Being an avid reader and well accustomed by now to the author’s penchant for plot twists , I’m constantly trying to unearth or figure out the clues. I’d make a guess , it’d turn out to be right but then there would come an extra twist that I never even considered, and I just love that. That the author is able to do this throughout the series and again in Water’s Wrath is to be applauded and the truth is it never gets old because it’s done so well.
I say kudos to Elise Kova for yet another masterfully, enthralling instalment in her Air Awakens series where not only your brain is engaged but your heart, your emotions.
The wide range of emotions that were evoked in me throughout reading Water’s Wrath was kaleidoscopic; so many feels guys!! I felt like I was ripped apart, put back together and ripped apart again. Every time I thought all was well and dandy, that feeling of security was taken away and the characters were put into situations which left me with my heart in my hand.
The ending was perfect and a great lead into the following and last book in the series. Thankfully it was less of a cliffhanger than an introduction to Crystal Crowned and now I need to get my hands on that book like now!
The Air Awakens series is hands down one of the best YA fantasy series around. If you haven’t picked them up yet. move them to the top of your TBR list and binge-read them in time for the release of Water’s Wrath. You wont be disappointed. You get a bad-ass heroine, a couple of hot princes, awesome elemental magic, plots and subplots, scheming and dubious characters, political intrigue, you name it, it’s got it.  🙂
