About the Book:
Everyone in Dahlia’s world knows when they’re going to die. Except her.
Her father has never shown her the pocket watch counting down the days she has left to live. When he sacrifices himself to save her from her scheduled death, Dahlia abandons her comfortable home and sets off after his murderer to uncover the secrets her father died to protect…and the time research that could bring him back to life.
Then she meets Farren Reed. She should hate him. He’s an enemy soldier, a cowardly deserter, and the most insufferable man Dahlia’s ever met. Still, she needs all the help she can get, and Farren is the only chance she has to find the man who murdered her father. But Farren has only twenty-seven days left on his watch.
In that time, Dahlia must recover her father’s time research, foil a psychotic general’s plot, and learn to survive in a world that will never be the same. But the research holds secrets more dangerous than she had ever imagined. She will have to choose what is most important: revenge, Farren’s life, or her own. And time is running out.
Excerpt From Chapter 22
Keet led the way toward the pier where the Wayfarer Elizabeth drifted in the air at the ends of its docking ropes like some chubby, mismatched creature. Light glowed from the bridge. The hatch shuddered open as they walked along the pier; Tiberius had seen their approach. A precarious steel plank gangway spanned the gap to the ship.
The docks were built at the edge of Lawson’s Ridge where airships could easily maneuver in and out. No one had bothered with railing; piers ended in a thousand meter drop down the cliff face. It made for an invigorating walk.
They were passing the deserted fee booth, still fifty yards or more from the hatch, when the first shots rang out. A bullet whizzed past Farren’s ear.
“There they are!”
“That’s Dahlia Walker!”
Men streamed from the buildings beside the pier, brandishing pistols and tesla rifles. There were over a dozen—too many to fight.
They’ve been waiting for us, Farren realized. His heart sank. A streak of electricity blackened the ground near his feet.
“You two get Grimes on the ship,” ordered Keet. “I’ll cover you.”
The bounty hunter heaved Grimes’ small body at Farren and swung the tesla rifle from her back. Farren caught the unconscious man under the arms. Dahlia sprinted for the hatch without a backwards glance. So much for a team effort.
He hefted Grimes onto his back and ran. The leg brace was like a lead weight hampering his movements, dragging his foot down. A bolt of electricity struck the side of the airship in a shower of sparks. Smoke stung his nose. Grimes bumped up and down on his shoulders. At least he makes a nice shield.
Keet’s tesla rifle crackled and a man screamed. Dull blue electricity flickered in the night. Bullets splintered the wooden dock near Farren’s boots; the men with pistols were targeting their legs.
Tiberius stood on the ship’s bridge, clearly illuminated by the interior lights. His massive hands danced across the control panels: igniting engines, directing power.
Dahlia scampered over the gangway. She ducked into the hatch, flattening herself against a bulkhead. Another electricity-induced scream issued from behind Farren. Keet shouted obscenities with every shot, her footsteps pounding the wooden planks.
