Goodreads Summary:

This contemporary crime story takes place over three weeks in November and unfolds against the multi-cultural backdrop of Soho, London. Branen had to leave the UK six years before to escape his complex clandestine history and the consequences of a crime that achieved worldwide notoriety. When his daughter is brutally murdered in Soho he believes that he could be the reason. He returns to his old hunting grounds to find the killer. His search brings him into conflict with the British Secret Service and Soho’s underworld. He is forced to flee Soho again after a tragic meeting with his ex-wife. His past has caught up with him and the hunter becomes the hunted. Now forty years old Branen wants to stop running and to remove forever the continuing threat to his life. In an effort to get rid of his pursuers he is faced with the prospect that his only chance of survival could lead to his death. ‘I have now read the novel myself and I think it’s very good… I will not be the only publisher who finds it first rate.’ Christopher MacLehose, Publisher of ‘The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo’ – part of Stieg Larsson’s Millennium Trilogy.

A.W. Rock interviews Costas owner of Costas Lounge in Soho :

AWR – “How long have you been in the UK?”

Costas – “My brother was killed when the Turks invaded Cyprus and I left a couple of years after that.”

AWR – “Why did you leave Cyprus, what happened?”

Costas – “Well I got involved with the local resistance and after an attack on an army border post in Nicosia the Turks came after me and I had to escape.”

AWR – “And then what?”

Costas – “I came to the UK and went down the Seven Sister’s Road, in Islington.. there are a lot of Greek cafes there.”

AWR – “Then what?”

Costas – “I worked in the cafes and did freelance work for the Greek mafia, as they liked to call themselves. The Turks were based in Green Lanes on the other side of Islington.. there was a bit of a turf war between the two communities.”

AWR – “Then what?”

Costas – “One night we visited this Turk who ran Greek girls.. when we turned up there was this young Turkish guy being tortured. We took them by surprise and I got this lad out of trouble.”

AWR – “What then?”

Costas – “We started an import business together.. bringing in olive oil, humus, feta, and Turkish delight. We did well but both communities didn’t like us working together so they torched us.”

AWR – “How long have you owned Costas Lounge?”

Costas – “Mahmed decided that it was too dangerous for us to carry on so he got married. I was lucky.. there was an Italian restaurant owner in Dean Street who wanted to get out of Soho so we did a deal. I took over the business and arranged that I would pay him off over time from my income.. it was like a private mortgage. I was twenty-four years old and had my Soho bar.. it was at about that time that I met Ben, who later changed his name to Branen.”

AWR – “You two became good friends?”

Costas – “Yes, I’m only four years older than him but I became his sort of mentor.”

AWR – “Why are you attracted to Soho?”

COSTAS – “It’s like a village and that’s where I came from in Cyprus.

AWR – “Do you have any family here or in Cyprus?”

COSTAS – “My family are my Soho friends.”
