My Review

I must admit that I was drawn to the this bind-up because of its beautiful cover and the mention of dragons. I didn’t need to know anymore that so delving into this world was a pleasant surprise.

Kyra and Sebastian, the two main characters. are hybrids, both in their own way trying to avoid having to choose one side of their selves over another. Kya is a Moorigad a dragon hybrid of the water and fire dragons. Her parents, each claiming a side of her hybrid self, would like for her to choose their side since it is rumoured that to choose to remain Moorigad can only lead to madness and ultimate self-destruction as the two sides war for dominance. Kyra is not so sure she even believes these rumours and is reluctant to make a choice. She runs away to get away from all the pressure being exerted by the two sides of family and soon finds herself in a precarious situation which might expose her to the human world, who are ignorant of the existence of these supernatural creatures. In her time of need, she is saved by a magical and seemingly sentient carnival. How cool is that? This carnival is home to a ton of supernatural creatures and Kyra fits right in. She soon makes her home there and becomes best of friends with Sebastian.

However, when she rescues someone who the Grim Reaper had claimed, thus stealing him out of the jaws of death, she sets off a chain of disastrous events which will impact not just her life but those she care about most. Marcus, the ‘man’ she saved, is not who he seems and he has hidden agendas that could very well prove to be deadly and put the one person she would literally die for, in his direct line of fire.

Moorigad: Dragon Collection was a story filled with surprising twists, an array of mythological creatures , even the Grim Reapers and made for an immersive, challenging yet entertaining read. The characters were well-developed. I understood their internal motivations, their reason for their actions and what they hoped to accomplish,. Kyra’s choices shapes her over the course of the three books and Sebastian’s growth is also evident as a result of his actions.

I loved this locale of a magical carnival with its mysteries and its ability to protect those it has chosen. There are many layers to the story than what I initially envisioned, and it was fun and challenging to unravel it all. I did find some parts to be somewhat convoluted in the way the story was told especially in the first book. It felt lacking in some background and so I felt like I was thrown into the deep end and had to find my own way out. The fighting scenes were “muddled’ for lack of a better word, and not so easily visualised due to the way they were written. I really had to take my time with this one but I think it was worth it.

I’m glad I read this in its current format where I had all three books at the ready because the books ended really awkwardly which would have turned me off, if I had to wait on the other books. That being said, I was amazed with the complexity and creativity exhibited by author in bringing this world to life. It was simply, magical.

Overall, a mesmerising fantasy filled with a wide array of mythological creatures, intrigue, a splash of romance with underlying themes of friendship, love and making hard choices thereby discovering oneself in the process. A must-read for lovers of YA fantasy and dragon lovers!
